Complete these simple steps and join the community of SVO Hybrid owners.Step 1: Obtain a Diesel Vehicle or Power GeneratorStep 2: Browse this website and Plantdrive.ca. Step 3: Submit a "quote-request" form (here) Step 4: Make a deposit to hold your conversion date.Step 5: Decide if you want the conversion done at your site or in our shop (Vancouver / Squamish).Step 6: Obtain used cooking oil from a local restaurant and remove the impurities with one of our WVO purification systems or purchase from a local supplier (Click Fuel Tab Above)

Kit Description Single Tank: Best suited for 1980's-mid 90's Mercedes Benz. SVO and diesel are mixed in the same tank. 90% SVO in the summer, 50% SVO in the average Vancouver winter. Cheapest reliable SVO system available on the market. Very popular in Germany.. Double Tank The Double Tank is the standard system for SVO users in North America for every diesel car, truck, and generator. SVO is stored in a 45-200L tank and a toggle (or computer) operated valve is used to select SVO or Diesel fuel. Thermostats only allow the switch to SVO after the vehicle has warmed to its operating temperature (1-5 minutes). Prior to shut down for >2 hours at time, the toggle, or an auto-controller, is used to "Switchover" back to diesel, thus purging the lines of SVO and replacing them with diesel, which starts better when cold. This prevent cold starting on VEG, which may cause long term damage on anythign but Mercedes indirect injection engies. This SVO tank does not need to be heated for reliable driving during summer or mild winter conditions (>-5C). The tank should be heated with a HotFox Tank heater for cooler conditions. Experimental Single Tank: We are experimenting with TDi and other single tank vehicles. As of yet, we do not warranty or recommend them, but for those seeking a price point conversion, and are willing to experiment with only email & phone support from us and PlantDrive, this option may be for you. You'll need a block, oilpan, or coolant heater, and a Single Tank kit. Plug in for 1-2 hours prior to morning use, and don't let your engine get too cold between stops and you should be able to use 75% WVO without damage. Cold engines starting with VEG oil, on anything but Mercedes indirect engines, may cause long term damage. Contact us here for more info.

We guarantee the performance of the conversion for 30 days of driving on labor involved in the conversion of your vehicle to vegetable oil. Due to the age of many vehicles converted, the variability in WVO used as fuel by many operators, we cannot gurantee a hiccup-free transition to reclaimed plant based fuels. Most conversions work without error, some require minor adjustments within the 30 day period, which is provided at no labor cost. Some conversions will require additional parts or labor before or after the 30 day period, especially where the client is warned beforehand of a suspect engine component (ie old fuel pump / old injectors) which can often be easily diagnosed by rough start, smoke during starup, idle or operation, or other obvious signs of age, leaks, or malfunction.

PlantDrive components come with 1 year warranty. Labor to replace / repair covered for 30 days, beyond this, labor charges to replace defective parts will be incurred.

We've converted just about every common diesel engine on the market including Mercedes 300, Cat, Dodge 12V, 24V, Ford PowerStroke 7.3, 6.0, International, Toyota 2LTE, 3L, Mitsubishi (Delica 300 and 400), Kubota, Northern Lights, Hatz, Isuzu, VW (td, TDi). How does it affect my car? Read the papers in the 'Community' section. Power and performance are unaltered. Emissions are greatly reduced. Longevity depends on oil quality. Europe has a CEN standard for SVO as fuel in diesel engines. Deutz certified their engines for SVO use in the 1980's. Many thousands of SVO / WVO cars have been on the road for years. Properly modified engines are reliable. Good oil may improve engine health with higher lubricity. Some engines don't work well on WVO. We don't offer conversions for these makes / models. How much $$ can I save? The kit can save many thousands of dollars and ROI in 6-12 months and reduce diesel consumption by 90-95%.Is it truly green? Page 2 Yep, cold mornings... these can be trouble for any diesel engine let alone a WVO Hybrid that hasn't been purged adequatelyPreventative1- ensure all your glow plugs are working2- ensure you're purging enough (3 minutes on cold nights / expectedly cold mornings)3- keep diesel tank more than half full (otherwise purged mixture will become too concentrated, resulting VEG in diesel tank may cause clogging of diesel filter...)4- fuel conditioner in both tanks (Lucas etc).5- synthetic oil - good cold flow properties (5w30 or lowest first number allowable by your manufacturer)Service your starting system1- change stock diesel filter2- change VM2 veg filter3- change your in-tank diesel filter & screen (check your make / model to find out if there is a screen / filter in your tank)4- dredge your tank (or drain it if there is a drain plug)Additions for better cold weather starting1- add a engine heater (block, oil pan, lower rad heater) and plug it in overnight (use an outdoor timer 1-3 hrs should do it)2- add a 12V circulation pump in the 3/8 coolant hose leading to VM2 (avail on PlantDrive.ca)3- insulate your coolant lines and VM2 if its under your car / truck4- add a HotFox tank heater (or stick on 12V heater for metal tanks)

Page 4 Start with conservatively long purge cycles at least 5 minutes or 5km before your parking location. Slowly work the purge cycle down to 2 minutes. Each car is different. If the cars resists starting after sitting, increase the purge time.Don't leave the system in SVO mode when parked or idling. If you don't want to run a whole purge cycle, park, turn off the vehicle, switch to diesel. Upon start up (less than 2 hours later in the summer, 1 hour later in the winter) start the vehicle and immediately toggle to SVO. If your vehicle doesn't start right away, shorten your errands or purge prior.Run at high RPM every week on the highway.Purge with a full tank of diesel every couple months. Add fuel conditioner to diesel fuel during this tank.Replace diesel fuel filter a few weeks after running SVO.. Be aware that your diesel tank may have a filter or screen that may eventually clog when SVO solubilizes decades of carbon buildup. This filter / screen may need to be changed if the filter replacements do not remidy the problem.Monitor fluid levels. Check water at drain of both SVO filter and diesel filter weekly.Select and filter your SVO properly. No cloudy SVO allowed. Should be clear, strong tea colored. Beer-ale colored at most. No sludge.Change engine oil at 2/3 time rather than 3/3 (regular interval) or 1 month earlier than usual. Monitor for increasing engine oil levels. If noticed (very rare), have engine oil inspected; vegetable oil may be passing a seal and entering the crankcase. Use full synthetic motor oil.VM2 Filter Elements: click here:

Kit Components ESP - Early Switchover Preventer - this is a thermostat that closes and allows 12V to travel from your toggle switch (or other controller) to the valves and vegtherm, switching your system to VEG. The ESP is installed in the coolant system and closes at 50C.VegSensor - used in smaller cars and trucks - prevents overheating of the fuel. Usually attached to a injector line.Valve - two 3ways or one 6Port motor valve are usually installed to select the fuel from the diesel or veg tank and return the fuel to the diesel tank or loop the VEG back to the supply valve. In some cases three valves can be used to avoid pushing the purge mixture back through the VEG filter when switching back to diesel. Does not reduce purge time. May extend VEG filter life.VegTherm - inline high amperage heater relayed to the supply valve, thus heating the fuel only when on VEGVM2 - coolant heated VEG filter.Tank - Holds VEG fuelHandsFree controller - direct connection to ignition... used inline with ESP to control swithover to VEG each time car is started. Also requires a functioning Turbo Timer (often comes with aftermarket Remote Start / Alarm modules). Need a constant source of WVO. Hassle free switchover and purge.

Collect

The quick and dirty for WVO collection. 1) Find a local restaurant. Mom & Pops type joint. Be professional, discuss their waste cooking oil managmenet system. Offer to take it away for free. Leave a business card. Purchase them a funnel so the oil can go back into the original cubbie. 2) Collect the oil and bring it home. 3) Let it sit somewhere for 2-3 weeks. 4) Pour off the top 7/8th, leaving crud in the bottom. 5) Amalgamate the crud from multiple containers until you can pour off the top 7/8 again. 6) Dispose of the remaining crud appropriately.

Some people get fancy with filtration systems and centrifuges, but generally this isn't necessary. You can pour the jug through a sock filter 30/10micron at the beginning but you'll end up holding the jug for a while. Pumping through a filter into your tank is a nice option, but pumps are a little expensive, so start simple if you don't have the finances.

About Us

After spending years making Biodiesel at UBC it became clear that the Biofuel industry was moving in the direction of food crop feedstocks. We don't think food should be used for fuel. In addition, the art of making Biodiesel is dangerous, messy, and intesive.

We converted our first diesel in 2004 and haven't looked back. Seven years and dozens of conversions later, we still get inspired by every conversion. The look in the eye of each new convert, freshly freed from the grips of the fossil fuel industry, is priceless.

Geoff Hill has a MSc from UBC, taught at the UofA, founded the CanmoreCoop and the UBC Biodiesel Project, and is currently workign on a PHD.

Scott Kerr joined the team in 2009 after working overseas in New Zealand and adds a breadth of experience to all aspects of the business.

Ross' Mercedes Ross Muirhead, 83 MercedesConverted Nov. 2009"After doing research on the differences between running my '83 MB turbo diesel on bio-diesel or on straight vegetable oil, I decided on the later for several technical and environmental reasons. By going to SVO I could better control the fuel I was putting into the car in that it had no fossil (scroll-> fuel component and I could be my own fuel supplier. I contacted PlantDrive in Salmon Arm and the technical advise I got was very helpful and encouraging as I could use the single tank system, add a new 5 micron heated filter and an extra heating line and I was done. Switchover, the installer in Vancouver received the parts and completed the conversion in less than an day. I now have been running on SVO (with some diesel in the colder periods) with no problems to report. Switchover tighten up the new connections after 2 weeks as they did need it with expansion and contraction taking place. Update: Winter 2010 Logged 20,000 kms WVOEstimated savings: $2000I've driven approximately 20,000km on used veggie including some long distance trips without problems. The system is still tight and operating smoothly even into winter. Geoff worked extra at the installation without charge just to make sure everything was just right and checked up regularly afterward. I'm very satisfied with everything.

Update: Spring 2011Logged 30,000 kms WVOEstimated savings: $3000I've put on 30,000 wvo km's since my conversion. I've averaged about 10,000km per filter and have had some minor issues with the electrical system since then. Any issue I've had with the system Geoff has responded within one day with a diagnosis and suggestions and is always willing to talk me through the components of the system. Recently I had a challenge with a circuit breaker that was installed in my system, Geoff had me talk through my system and he wrote up a wiring diagram specific to my truck which I recieved the next day. I bought a $10 part at Napa and replaced it according to Geoff's diagram and now my wvo truck is running happy on wvo again! Currently I'm using my wvo truck for an urban farming business I started in Penticton this year, people love having their vegetables grown and delivered using a truck that runs on vegetable oil!

This 15kW Cat/Terex Diesel generator has been converted to make off-grid power far more cleanly than before on a combination of diesel fuel, locally produced small-batch biodiesel, and SVO. It is an integral part of a farm power system in rural BC that includes PV panels and a battery bank. The SVO system involves a 2nd fuel tank and pump, filter/heater, and vegtherm inline DC heater. There is a plan to connect an electric water heater as a SVO tank for future full winter usage powered directly off the main gen. panel.

I have noticed no lack of power while driving and the exhaust smells like burnt veggie oil instead of toxic diesel smoke. Geoff was very attentive to detail and with good customer communication ensured that the process went smoothly.

Weekly visits to my local white spot provide all my driving energy needs and enough to save up for some road trips! I especially like they way they integrated the spare tank fuel guage in my centre console and installed pump and filter so that I never have to pour oil into my tank... no spills, just like filling up at the station. Best of all, since I drive about 7-8 hours per week and no longer pay for diesel I have calculated that the system will pay for itself in a year and a half! And i am carbon neutral too! Diverting waste streams into productive reuse is one of the keys to sustainability, and Switchover is leading the charge! Update: Winter 2010:Thanks again for the conversion, my Delica is running great. I drove over 10,000 km this spring/summer on long road trips as well as commuting to the city. I buy a tank of diesel every 6 weeks or so, whereas I used to fill up every week or two! I have probably saved almost 1000$ already. Best investment I ever made!

I know less than the average dude about cars, but I am someone that needs to know in detail how something 'new' works before I am willing to step out of the box. I am a cook and a gardener, so it was an important factor that the hardware is simple and surprisingly minimal enough that I even I can understand how it works. The SVO conversion also means that I have double the fuel capacity for those long trips out in the boonies.I am still amazed when I think about how straight forward the switchover was.Yee.

Switchover converted our Mitsubishi Pajero and after 8000kms of veggie-driving, everything is still running great. Our truck was outfitted for an extended road trip and we managed to drive almost half of out 17000km journey on WVO that we collected and cleaned as we went.

Geoff is a dedicated expert installer and devotee of SVO conversions. There were some minor tweaks required after the initial installation and Geoff went out of his way to accommodate our traveling schedule and make sure everything was working properly. We are now looking at converting our '03 Golf as well!
